El café en Latinoamérica

(Coffee in Latin America.)

One might expect that Ecuadorians drink fresh coffee every morning because most of the world´s coffee comes from Latin America (Brazil is the world's largest producer and Colombia the world's third largest). While Ecuadorians do indeed drink a lot of coffee, Ecuadorians rarely make coffee from freshly ground beans. Most of the coffee in Ecuador is freeze-dried. Almost all restaurants here only serve Nestle (or some other brand of) instant coffee.

What I have with my breakfast every morning. My host mom generally gives me a cup of scalded milk in the morning and then I mix this in to make a drink known as café con leche (coffee milk).

  1. So my boy became a "coffee" drinker! Have you had a chance to try anything from freshly ground beans? I think that would be such a treat!!

...And how was working with the dental students?

  2. Another interesting cultural tidbit. That's not at all how I imagined coffee in South America. Too bad they export all the good stuff. What do they serve in cafes? Are there any Starbucks? Hope you're enjoying your travels this weekend. Love you.

  3. Hooray, I'm blogging(I hope).

What a variety of adventures you've already had---and cool that you're taking the time to share the scenery, folks, and culture with those of us back home----love the bday and riding the mule pix. Very clever you picked the perfect time to be in a sunny clime. Wish I knew how to send pics of the snow. Guess you can see it on TV---or maybe not. Is there American programming or are you watching it in Spanish?

Are the stars brighter there? Night sky clearer?

Todays pix--nice for you to have such a memorable "first coffee" experience(mine was from the coffee cart at my first job where every morning at 9:15 a woman pushing a cart came onto the floor....so choice was either sit at your desk or join the line and have a little socializing with coffee on the side--unfortunately it always smelled better than it tasted).

Look forward to following your trip.

  4. Hey Aunt Kathy!

All of the programming is in Spanish, although they do show a few U.S. programs here. For some reason the Simpsons is really big here (doesn't make sense to me since the show is just a satire of U.S. culture..). In general though it's Latin American news and telenovelas (South American soap operas). The snow in the Northeast has made the news here several times though, presumably because many Ecuadoreans have family members living in/around NYC. Hope all is well!
